Artist Biography

Pianist Ningjialu (Lulu) Liu enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral keyboardist, with performances spanning the United States and China’s Greater Bay Area. Her artistic approach is shaped by an attentive ear for musical detail and an imaginative sense of expression, as she explores the richness of sound and the connections music can create with contemporary audiences.

As a soloist, Liu has performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, CCM Philharmonia, Texas Medical Center Orchestra, and Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also appeared in solo recitals and chamber music performances across the United States and China. Alongside her solo engagements, she serves as a core keyboardist with the Macao Orchestra and collaborates with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra as a guest keyboardist, moving between piano, celesta, and other keyboard instruments in a wide range of orchestral repertoire.

Liu holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, following studies at the New England Conservatory and Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Her principal teachers include Peter Takács, Victor Rosenbaum, and Awadagin Pratt. She has also studied with the internationally acclaimed pianist Maria João Pires. These experiences, shaped by different musical traditions and perspectives, have contributed to her open-minded and individual approach to interpretation.

Beyond the concert stage, Liu is a dedicated educator and currently teaches piano at Beijing Normal University–Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (BNBU). She is particularly interested in the relationship between the pianist and the instrument, exploring how physical movement, imagination, and musical expression inform one another. For Liu, technique is not a fixed set of physical rules, but a means of discovering individual possibilities and developing a personal musical voice.

Her artistic pursuits also extend to concert programming and interdisciplinary collaboration, with a growing focus on music by women composers and works less frequently heard in mainstream concert repertoire. She is the founder of Beyond Price: The Female Composer Initiative, through which she seeks to create more opportunities for these works to be performed, explored, and heard. She is also a co-founder of Variation Chamber Music Society, exploring new ways of connecting classical music with contemporary audiences.
